Malign
The following image was taken during an malign (mirror align) test.
The bright spots in the picture are images of a star reflected by each
of the 36 mirror segments that make up the Keck II primary mirror.
The bright spot near the bottom of the image is from segment 27, which
has been intentionally kicked out (for testing purposes). Malign
allows the telescope operators to determine the best alignment of each
mirror segment for optimal observing clarity.
